A Life in Science
Early Life and Education
Sergio Erill was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1938. This was during the Spanish Civil War. He went to school at the Lycee Francais in Barcelona. Later, he studied at the University of Barcelona. He became a medical doctor in 1963.
In 1967, he earned his PhD from the same university. His research was about finding antibodies in the body. After that, he went to the United States. He trained in clinical pharmacology at the University of Kansas and the University of Michigan.
Becoming a Professor
When he returned to Barcelona, he became a certified specialist. He was certified in Internal Medicine in 1970. Later, he was certified in Clinical Pharmacology in 1983.
He worked as a professor at several universities. From 1970 to 1975, he taught at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Then, he became a full professor of pharmacology. He taught at the University of the Basque Country and the University of Granada. In 1983, he came back to Barcelona. He became the director of the Esteve Foundation. He also taught at the Université de Montréal until 1998.
Important Roles and Research
Sergio Erill held many important positions in science. He was the president of the Spanish Society of Pharmacology. He also led the Spanish Clinical Pharmacology Commission. He was an expert for the WHO on drug evaluation.
He focused his research on how diseases affect medicines. He studied how illnesses like chronic kidney disease or diabetes change how drugs work in the body. For example, he looked at how diseases affect drugs attaching to blood plasma proteins. This research helped doctors understand how to give the right amount of medicine to patients.
The Esteve Foundation
One of his biggest achievements was leading the Esteve Foundation. He became its first director in 1982. The foundation was started by the family of Dr. Antoni Esteve. Its main goal was to help pharmacology grow. Pharmacology is the study of how medicines work.
Sergio Erill believed in sharing scientific ideas. He had a famous saying for the foundation: "not a laboratory for mixing compounds, but a laboratory for mixing scientists". He led the foundation for 37 years. During this time, he started many projects to help scientists share their knowledge. You can find out more about these projects on the Foundation's website.
