Sergio Tomás Massa (born 28 April 1972) is an Argentine politician who has held many important roles in his country's government. From 2022 to 2023, he was the Minister of Economy, which means he was in charge of Argentina's money and financial plans.
Before that, from 2019 to 2022, he was a National Deputy for the Buenos Aires Province. This means he was elected by the people to represent them in the country's main law-making body, similar to a member of parliament. During this time, he also served as the President of the Chamber of Deputies, which is a very important leadership role in the government.
Massa has also been the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers from 2008 to 2009, working closely with the President. He was also the intendente (mayor) of Tigre twice, leading that city. He also led ANSES, which is Argentina's agency for social security, helping people with pensions and other benefits.
He started his own political party, the Renewal Front, in 2013. He ran for president in 2015 and again in 2023.

Early life and education
Sergio Massa was born in 1972 in San Martín, a town near Buenos Aires. His parents were from Italy. He grew up in a nearby area called San Andrés and went to St Augustine's schools. Later, he studied at the University of Belgrano. He is married to Malena Galmarini and they have two children.
Political journey
Starting in politics
Massa began his political career in 1989. He joined the Justicialist Party in 1995. In 1999, he was elected as a provincial deputy for Buenos Aires. This was his first step into making laws for his home province.
After a big political change in Argentina in 2001, he was chosen to lead ANSES. This agency is very important because it manages social security, which includes pensions for retired people and other benefits. He worked there for several years, helping to manage the country's social support programs.
Leading Tigre and working for the President
In October 2007, Massa was elected Mayor of Tigre, a city in the Paraná Delta. He was very popular there.
In 2008, when he was 36, he became the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers for President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. This is a very powerful job, like being the President's main helper and manager of the government's daily work. He was the youngest person to hold this job at the time.
After some time, Massa decided to leave this role and returned to being the Mayor of Tigre in July 2009. He was re-elected as mayor in 2011 with a lot of support from the people of Tigre.
Forming his own party
In 2013, Sergio Massa decided to create his own political party called the Renewal Front. This was a big step, as it meant he was moving away from the political group he had been part of before. His new party became very successful in elections in Buenos Aires Province.
Running for President
In 2015, Massa ran for President of Argentina. He joined with another politician, José Manuel de la Sota, to form a group called United for a New Alternative. He focused his campaign on fighting corruption and protecting the environment. He came in third place in the first round of voting.
In 2017, he ran for a seat in the National Senate, which is another part of the country's law-making body, but he was not elected that time.
Leading the Chamber of Deputies
Before the 2019 elections, Massa joined a new group of political parties called Frente de Todos. He was chosen to run for a seat in the National Chamber of Deputies again.
He won his seat easily. On 4 December 2019, he was elected as the President of the Chamber of Deputies. In this role, he helped make sure that men and women had equal chances in government committees. He also worked to lower the costs of running the parliament.

In December 2021, he was chosen to continue as President of the Chamber for another two years. One of his main goals was to reduce taxes for middle-class families.
Becoming the "Super-Minister"
On 29 July 2022, Sergio Massa was chosen to be the new Minister of Economy. This was a very big job because he took over three different government departments at once: Economy, Productive Development, and Agriculture. Because he was in charge of so many important areas, people started calling him superministro ("super-minister").
When he took office, people hoped he would help Argentina's economy. The country's money, the Argentine peso, became stronger against the US dollar shortly after he started.
Another presidential campaign
In June 2023, Massa was announced as the candidate for president for a new political group called Unión por la Patria. He won the first round of the election in October 2023. However, in the final round in November, he lost to Javier Milei. After the election, he said he would step away from politics.
Personal life
Sergio Massa is married to Malena Galmarini, who is also a politician. They met in 1996 and got married in 2001. They have two children, Milagros and Tomás.
Massa is a big fan of the football club Club Atlético Tigre.
