Early Life and Education
Sergio Massa was born in San Martín, a suburb of Buenos Aires, in 1972. His parents were from Italy. He grew up in a nearby area called San Andrés. He went to St Augustine's primary and secondary schools. Later, he studied law at the University of Belgrano, a private university. He married Malena Galmarini.
Political Journey
Starting in Politics
Massa began his political career in 1989 with the UCeDé party. In 1995, he joined the Justicialist Party. In 1999, he was elected as a representative to the Buenos Aires Province Chamber of Deputies. After a big political crisis in 2001, he was appointed as the Director of ANSeS, Argentina's social security administration.
He continued to work for ANSeS under President Néstor Kirchner. In 2005, he won a seat in the Chamber of Deputies. However, he chose to stay as Director of ANSeS. During his time there, he helped many people move their private pension savings to the government's social security system.
Mayor of Tigre and Cabinet Chief Role
In October 2007, Massa was elected Mayor of Tigre. In 2008, he became the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers for President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. At 36, he was the youngest person to hold this important position.
He resigned from this role in July 2009 and returned to being Mayor of Tigre. He was re-elected as mayor in 2011 with a large number of votes.
Forming the Renewal Front
In 2013, Massa decided to create his own political group called the Frente Renovador (Renewal Front). This was a big step away from the ruling party at the time. His new group did very well in the elections in Buenos Aires province, winning against the party he used to be part of.
Presidential Campaigns
In 2015, Massa ran for President of Argentina. He formed an alliance called United for a New Alternative. He focused his campaign on fighting corruption and promoting renewable energy. He finished third in the first round of voting.
In 2017, his Renewal Front joined with other groups to form the 1País (1Country) coalition. Massa ran for a seat in the National Senate but was not elected.
Leading the Chamber of Deputies
Before the 2019 elections, Massa decided to support the new Frente de Todos coalition. He ran for a seat in the National Chamber of Deputies and won. On December 4, 2019, he was elected as the President of the Chamber of Deputies.
As president, Massa made changes to ensure more women were included in parliamentary groups. He also worked to lower the costs of running the parliament. In December 2021, he was chosen to continue as president of the Chamber for another two years.

One of his main goals was to reduce taxes for the middle class. In 2022, his party suggested new laws to raise the minimum income for paying taxes.
Becoming Minister of Economy
On July 29, 2022, Massa was named Argentina's new Minister of Economy. This role combined three ministries: Economy, Productive Development, and Agriculture. Because of this, the media called him a superministro (super-minister).
When Massa took office, there was hope in the markets. The Argentine currency, the peso, became stronger against the US dollar.
2023 Presidential Bid
On June 23, 2023, Massa was announced as the presidential candidate for the new Unión por la Patria coalition. He won the primary election for his party in August 2023. In the general election in October 2023, he received the most votes in the first round. However, he lost the final election in November to Javier Milei. After the election, he said he would step away from politics.
