Sergio Rodríguez Gómez (born on June 12, 1986) is a Spanish former professional basketball player. He played for 21 seasons, mostly in the EuroLeague and for Real Madrid in the Spanish Liga ACB. He also played for a short time in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Sergio, who is 1.91 meters (6 feet 3 inches) tall, played as a point guard. He was nicknamed "El Chacho".

Sergio Rodríguez won the EuroLeague title in 2015, 2019, and 2023. He was named the EuroLeague MVP in 2014. He was also chosen for the All-EuroLeague First Team in 2014.

Rodríguez was a regular player for the senior Spain national team. With them, he won a FIBA World Cup in 2006. He also earned an Olympics silver medal in 2012 and a bronze medal in 2016. He won a EuroBasket title in 2015, a silver medal in 2007, and bronze medals in 2013 and 2017.

Sergio Rodríguez's Basketball Journey

Starting Out in Spain (2003–2006)

Before joining the Portland Trail Blazers, Sergio Rodríguez was picked to play for the 2004 World Junior Select team. This team played against the best high school players in the United States at the Nike Hoop Summit.

Before playing in the NBA, Rodríguez played professional basketball for Estudiantes in the Spanish League. He played in a final against FC Barcelona during the 2003–04 season. He also won the ACB Rising Star Award for the 2004–05 season, which is given to a promising young player.

Playing in the NBA (2006–2010)

Sergio Rodríguez was chosen by the Phoenix Suns as the 27th pick in the first round of the 2006 NBA draft. Later that day, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. On July 20, 2006, the Trail Blazers signed him to an NBA contract.

During his time in Portland, he did not play much. He was mostly a back-up point guard. Other players like Jarrett Jack and Steve Blake were often chosen to play instead of him. He became good friends with fellow Spanish player Rudy Fernández on the court.

On June 25, 2009, Rodríguez was traded to the Sacramento Kings. He played 39 games for the Kings, averaging 6 points and 3.1 assists per game. On February 18, 2010, Rodríguez was traded again, this time to the New York Knicks. He played 27 games for the Knicks, averaging 7.4 points and 3.4 assists per game.

Returning to Real Madrid (2010–2016)

On July 5, 2010, after four seasons in the NBA, Rodríguez signed a three-year contract with the Spanish team Real Madrid. In July 2012, he signed an extension to stay with Real Madrid until the 2014–15 season.

In May 2014, he was named to the All-EuroLeague First Team. Before the 2014 Final Four, he was named the EuroLeague MVP for the season. He averaged 14 points, 4.9 assists, and 2 rebounds per game.

In the 2014–15 season, Real Madrid won the EuroLeague championship. They beat Olympiacos 78–59 in the final game. Real Madrid also won the Spanish League championship that season. This meant Real Madrid won the triple crown (three major titles in one season).

Philadelphia 76ers (2016–2017)

On July 13, 2016, Rodríguez signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. He played his first game for the 76ers on October 26, 2016. He scored 12 points and had nine assists in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played 68 games and started 30 games for the team.

CSKA Moscow (2017–2019)

On July 17, 2017, Rodríguez signed with CSKA Moscow. In May 2018, he was named to the All-EuroLeague Second Team for the 2017–18 season.

Olimpia Milano (2019–2022)

On July 12, 2019, Rodríguez signed a three-year deal with the Italian basketball team, Pallacanestro Olimpia Milano. In his first game with Milano, he scored 21 points and had 4 assists. On July 2, 2022, Rodríguez left the Italian club after three seasons. He had also been the team's captain.

Final Return to Real Madrid (2022–2024)

On July 18, 2022, Rodríguez returned to Real Madrid for a one-year deal. On June 19, 2024, Sergio Rodríguez announced that he was retiring from professional basketball.

Playing for Spain's National Team

Sergio Rodríguez was considered one of the best young European basketball players of his age. He was named the MVP of the 2004 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. This tournament was held in Zaragoza, Spain. He led the Spanish junior team to win the gold medal. In that tournament, he averaged 19 points, 4.6 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.

In August 2006, Rodríguez won the gold medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship with the senior men's Spain national team. He also won a silver medal with Spain's senior national team at the EuroBasket 2007. In 2012, he won a silver medal at the Summer Olympics in London. In 2016, he won a bronze medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Rodríguez decided not to play in the 2019 World Cup because he needed to rest. He was later called to play for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which took place in 2021.

Sergio's Playing Style

Sergio Rodríguez was very good at pick and roll plays. He was also known for his amazing passing skills. He could often make exciting alley-oop passes to his teammates. Because of his passing and fancy dribbling, some people compared him to famous player Jason Williams. Throughout his EuroLeague career, he had a great ratio of assists to turnovers. He was also a good scorer, especially with his 3-point shots and free throws.
