In the 2006 NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns chose Sergio with the 27th pick. Later that day, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. On July 20, 2006, the Trail Blazers bought out his contract from his Spanish club, Estudiantes. They then signed him to a contract to play in the NBA.

During his time in Portland, Sergio did not play much. He was mostly a backup point guard. Other players like Jarrett Jack and Steve Blake often played instead of him. He did, however, develop a good connection with his Spanish teammate Rudy Fernández.

Sergio didn't always agree with his coach, Nate McMillan. McMillan felt Sergio was "too young" for the NBA.
