Sergio Tòfano (born August 20, 1886 – died October 28, 1973) was a talented Italian artist. He was an actor, a director, a playwright (someone who writes plays), a scene designer, and an illustrator. He created many things for the stage and for children's books.

Tofano was born in Rome, Italy. He started his acting career in 1909 with Ermete Novelli. Later, he joined Virgilio Talli's acting group from 1913 to 1923. Sergio Tofano quickly became known as a great comic actor. He brought a new style and depth to his funny roles. He worked with many famous actors and directors of his time. These included Dario Niccodemi, Luigi Almirante, Giuditta Rissone, Elsa Merlini, Vittorio De Sica, Evi Maltagliati, and Gino Cervi. He was especially famous for playing Doctor Knock in a play by Jules Romains. He also played Professor Toti in Luigi Pirandello's Pensaci, Giacomino!. He even led his own theater companies.

After the Second World War, Tofano continued to work with important directors. Some of these were Luchino Visconti and Giorgio Strehler.

The Creator of Signor Bonaventura

In 1917, Sergio Tofano created a very popular character for a children's magazine called Il Corriere dei Piccoli. This character was named Signor Bonaventura. His adventures were loved by children for over forty years! Tofano used the nickname Sto when he signed his work. He wrote and drew many children's books. He also illustrated a book called The Chess Set in the Mirror by Massimo Bontempelli.
