The Serra del Cadí is a cool mountain range in northern Catalonia, Spain. It's part of the Pre-Pyrenees mountains. The tallest point in the range is a peak called Vulturó, which stands really high at 2,648 meters (about 8,688 feet)!

This mountain range stretches from east to west. It sits between two areas called Alt Urgell and Berguedà. The Llobregat River actually starts its journey here. It begins in a place called Castellar de n'Hug at an altitude of 1,259 meters on the Serra del Cadí.

What is the Serra del Cadí Like?

The Serra del Cadí has a very interesting history, especially when you look at its rocks! The northern parts of the mountains are made of older rocks from the Jurassic period. But the very tops of the peaks are made of limestone from a time called the Eocene period.

The northern side of the range is super steep. It has a long line of cliffs that seem to go on forever! These mountains got their sharp, jagged shape during a huge process called the Alpine orogeny. This happened during the Tertiary period, when the Pyrenees mountains were forming. It's like the Earth's crust folded up to create these amazing peaks.

For a long time, these rough mountains made it hard to travel between Barcelona and an area called Cerdanya. But now, it's much easier! The Cadí Tunnel was built, along with the C-16 highway. This road follows the valley of the Llobregat River, making travel much faster.

Wildlife in the Cadí Mountains

The Serra del Cadí is also home to some amazing wildlife. For many years, people thought that wolves had disappeared from Catalonia. But recently, a wolf was spotted in the Serra del Cadí! This was the first time a wolf had been seen there in 80 years, which was very exciting for nature lovers.

Protected Areas and Parks

To keep the beautiful Serra del Cadí safe, a special place was created. It's called the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. This park was set up in July 1983. It protects not only the Serra del Cadí but also the nearby Serra de Moixeró, the famous Pedraforca mountain, and parts of the Tosa d'Alp and Puigllançada. These parks help protect the plants, animals, and natural beauty of the area for everyone to enjoy.
