Sessums is a small, unincorporated community located in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
You can find Sessums about 13 miles (21 km) east-southeast of Starkville. It is also about 6 miles (10 km) west of Artesia.
History of Sessums
Sessums grew up along an old train track. This track was part of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, which went to Columbus. In the year 1900, only 27 people lived in Sessums.
Who Was Sessums?
The community is named after Colonel Solomon David Sessums. He owned a lot of the land around this area. His family even had a horse track near their home.
Life in the Past
Long ago, Sessums was a busy little place. It had a church where people gathered and a school for children to learn. There were also several stores where people could buy things they needed. A "cotton gin" was also there, which was a machine that separated cotton fibers from their seeds.
Sessums was also known as an important center for dairy farming in Oktibbeha County. This means many farms in the area produced milk and other dairy products.
The Post Office
A post office served the community of Sessums for a very long time. It opened in 1876 and stayed open until the year 2000.
