Sevinj Nurugizi (Azerbaijani: Sevinc Nuruqızı), born on August 22, 1964, is a well-known Azerbaijani writer. She writes stories and books especially for children. Since 2001, she has been a member of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union. She also joined the Azerbaijan Journalists’ Union in 1999.
About Sevinj Nurugizi's Life
Sevinj Nurugizi Imanova was born in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, on August 22, 1964.
Her Education and Early Career
In 1981, Sevinj Nurugizi started her studies at the M.F.Akhundov Institute of Russian Language and Literature. She was a very good student and graduated with honors in 1986. After finishing university, she began working as a teacher. She taught Russian language and literature at a secondary school in Şelli-Garadaghly village, which is in the Aghdam District.
Her Work in Publishing and Media
Sevinj Nurugizi has had many important roles in publishing and media.
- From March 2003, she was the deputy editor-in-chief for Madaniyyat newspaper. This newspaper is part of the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan.
- In January 2006, she became the director of the creative team for Jirtdan and Umid. These are children's magazines published by Minamedia.
- She also worked as an editor and host for the “Chokhbilmish” children's program on Ijtimai Radio.
- Starting in 2007, she became the editor-in-chief and head of the Children's Literature department. She worked at Tahsil and Aspoligraf publishing houses.
Sevinj Nurugizi's Literary Achievements
Sevinj Nurugizi is known for her many articles and stories. They are often published in newspapers and magazines. She has also written plays that have been performed on stage.
- Her play Revenge is about the difficult events in Garabagh. It shows the struggles of refugees and the sadness of war. This play was performed at the Hagverdiyev Drama Theatre in Aghdam.
- Another play she wrote, Dolls, was shown at the State Puppet Theatre in Salyan.
Awards and Recognition
Sevinj Nurugizi has won several awards for her writing, especially for her children's books.
- In 2002, she won the Tofig Mahmoud award from the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan. This was for her excellent work for children.
- She was the first person from Azerbaijan to be nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2014. This award is very important for children's literature worldwide.
- In 2015, she won first place in the "Canakkale-100" competition for her poem "Canakkale Impassable." This competition was organized by the Turkish Embassy and the Azerbaijani Writers' Union.
- Her book "Travel to Ancient Baku" won the "Golden Word" literary competition in 2015. This competition is held by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan.
- The book "Travel to Ancient Baku" also won first place at an International Book Art Contest in Moscow in 2015.
- She won second place for her story "Edam" in the "Literary Freedom - 2015" story competition.
- She won first place in a competition for "The best prose, essay, drama works for younger schoolchildren." This competition was held by the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan.
- Her 20-episode series "Qəza balası Qaqa” won first place for its idea in the “I have an idea” project by Azanfilm.
- Her poem “For Khojaly” won an award in the “Khojaly Literary Prize” competition in 2017. This competition was held in the United Kingdom.
