Sexi was an ancient city built by the Phoenicians. It was located in what is now Almuñécar, a town on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern Spain. The Phoenicians were a people from the Middle East. They were great sailors and traders. They set up colonies, or settlements, all around the Mediterranean Sea. Sexi was one of these important trading posts. Later, the Romans called this place Sexi Firmum Iulium.
History of Sexi
The first parts of the ancient Phoenician settlement of Sexi are not very clear to historians. The city was located southwest of the Solorius Mons. This mountain range is known today as the Sierra Nevada.
Coins of Sexi
From the 3rd to the 2nd centuries BC, Sexi made many of its own coins. These coins often showed the Phoenician god Melqart on one side. Melqart was an important god for the Phoenicians. He was often linked to the sea and trade.
On the other side of the coins, there were usually one or two fish. This might have shown how much fish was in the sea nearby. It also probably showed that fish was a main product of the area. The people of Sexi likely caught and traded a lot of fish.
Sexi and Almuñécar
Experts believe that ancient Sexi is the same place as modern Almuñécar. This means that the city has been important for a very long time. It has been a settlement for thousands of years.
