Exploring Sgùrr a' Ghreadaidh
How Hard Is It to Climb?
Climbing Sgùrr a' Ghreadaidh is quite a challenge! It is known as one of the more difficult peaks in the Black Cuillin range to reach the top.
The simplest way up usually starts from a low point called An Dorus, which means "the Door" in Gaelic. You can get to An Dorus most easily from a place called Glen Brittle. However, even from An Dorus, the climb involves some tricky parts. The path right after An Dorus is a difficult scramble, known as a Grade 3 scramble. A scramble is like climbing, but you use both your hands and feet. The path leading to the top from the north also has a lot of scrambling, though it's a bit easier.
The mountain has two main tops, which are separated by a very narrow and sharp ridge. This ridge looks a bit like a knife edge!
The Young Pioneer: John MacKenzie
The first time anyone officially climbed Sgùrr a' Ghreadaidh was in 1870. A young man named John MacKenzie was part of that first climb, and he was only 14 years old at the time!
Even more amazing, John MacKenzie had already climbed another big mountain, Sgùrr nan Gillean, when he was just 10 years old. He grew up to become the first professional mountain guide in Britain. He was one of the most important people who explored and climbed the Cuillin mountains in the early days.
