Meshack R. Roberts was an important person in Texas history. He was born into slavery but became a skilled blacksmith and a minister. Later, he served in the Texas government as a state legislator and was involved in the Republican Party.

Early Life and Freedom

Meshack R. Roberts was moved to Gilmer, Texas in 1844 by his slaveowner, O. B. Roberts. During the American Civil War, he took care of the Roberts family. After the war, when slavery ended, O. B. Roberts gave Meshack and his family some land and materials to build a log cabin.

A couple of years later, he faced a dangerous attack from a group called the Ku Klux Klan in Gilmer. After he recovered, he moved to Marshall, Texas for safety.

Life in Marshall and Public Service

In Marshall, Meshack R. Roberts worked as a blacksmith. He was also a Methodist minister, helping people through his church.

In 1873, he won an election to become a state legislator in the Thirteenth Texas Legislature. This meant he helped make laws for Texas. He represented areas like Rusk County, Texas and Harrison County, Texas. He was so good at his job that he won two more elections, serving a total of three terms.

A Powerful Speaker

Even though Meshack R. Roberts could not read or write, he was known for his amazing speeches. People said his speeches were clear, logical, and very convincing. He would sign official papers with an "X" because he couldn't write his name.

As a preacher, he worked with his church to help start Wiley College, an important school. Records show he had a wife and a daughter.

Honoring His Legacy

In 2005, the Texas Legislature honored Meshack R. Roberts and other early African-American legislators. They were recognized for their important service and contributions to the state of Texas.
