A Look at History

Shahzadpur is a very old town in the Ambala District of Haryana. Its history includes periods of different rulers.

Sikh Rule in Shahzadpur

In January 1764, Shahzadpur came under Sikh Rule. This happened after Sikh forces took control of Sirhind. Sardar Karam Singh, a Sikh leader from the Sandhu Jatt family, became the first Sikh ruler of Shahzadpur. He ruled for 20 years until 1784. Interestingly, he didn't live in Shahzadpur much. He spent most of his time at Talwandi Sabo Village, a holy Sikh religious center.

Changes in Leadership

After Sardar Karam Singh passed away, his elder son, Gulab Singh, took over. He ruled until 1844. Then, his son, Sardar Shiv Kirpal Singh Sandhu, became the ruler. However, the power of the Shahzadpur Sikh Rulers changed in 1809. This was when the Cis-Sutlej states accepted protection from the British East India Company. Even after this, their descendants continued to rule until 1947. They were given special land grants, called Jagirs, by the British Government.

British Influence

For a period, in the absence of a direct ruler, Gurbakhsh Singh ruled Shahzadpur. After he died in 1786, his wife, Daya Kaur, took control. She ruled the area very well for over 37 years. In November 1808, Maharaja Ranjit Singh attacked Shahzadpur. He took control of Naraingarh and put pressure on Shahzadpur. The ruler of Shahzadpur then asked the British Government for help. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was forced to leave.

In 1809, the British Government took over the property. This happened after the Sikh states in the Cis Sutlej region accepted the protection of the British East India Company. Later, the Ambala Cantt (a military area) was built on land that belonged to Shahzadpur.
