Shamkir is a region, also called a rayon, located in the country of Azerbaijan. It's found in the northwestern part of Azerbaijan. The main city and capital of this region is also called Shamkir.
This region was created in 1930. For a while, during the time of Soviet rule, it was known by a different name: "Shamkhor." But in 1991, it was officially renamed back to Shamkir.
