Shamorie Saequan Ponds (born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 29, 1998) is a talented American basketball player. He currently plays professionally for the Erdenet Miners in The League. Before turning pro, Shamorie played college basketball for the St. John's Red Storm. He is known for his skills as a point guard.

Shamorie Ponds' Early Basketball Journey
High School Success in Brooklyn
Shamorie Ponds played high school basketball at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, New York. In 2016, he helped his team win their first New York City championship since 1954! After high school, he decided to stay close to home and play for St. John's under coach Chris Mullin.
Experts rated Ponds as a four-star recruit. This means he was considered one of the top young players in the country. He was ranked 37th overall and the 9th best point guard in his high school class of 2016.
College Career Highlights
Freshman Year at St. John's
As a freshman at St. John's, Shamorie quickly became one of the best new players in the Big East Conference. He scored an average of 17.4 points per game and made 3.3 assists as the starting point guard. At the end of his first season, he was named to the conference's All-Freshman team.
Sophomore Standout Performances
In his sophomore year, Ponds became a top player in the Big East. He gained national attention with amazing performances. He helped his team upset two highly ranked teams: fourth-ranked Duke and top-ranked Villanova. He also set a new record at Carnesecca Arena by scoring 44 points against the Marquette Golden Eagles.
At the end of his sophomore season, Ponds was named first-team All-Big East. He also won the Haggerty Award, which is given to the best college basketball player in the New York City area.
Junior Year and Moving to the NBA
After his sophomore year, Ponds thought about joining the 2018 NBA draft. However, he decided to return to St. John's for his junior season. In his junior year, he averaged 19.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. After this successful season, he left St. John's to pursue his dream of playing in the NBA.
Shamorie Ponds' Professional Basketball Journey
Starting with the Toronto Raptors (2019–2020)
Shamorie Ponds was not chosen in the 2019 NBA draft. However, the Houston Rockets signed him to play in the 2019 NBA Summer League. Later, the Toronto Raptors signed him to a special two-way contract in October 2019. This meant he would play for both the Raptors and their NBA G League team, the Raptors 905.
On November 27, 2019, Ponds made his NBA debut against the New York Knicks. He scored 4 points and made his first NBA basket! On December 31, 2019, he scored a new career high of 5 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Raptors later released him in January 2020.
Playing for Spars (2021)
In February 2021, Shamorie Ponds joined Spars, a team in the Bosnian League. He played for them for the rest of the 2020–21 season.
Delaware Blue Coats (2021–2022)
Ponds was the very first player chosen in the 2021 NBA G League draft by the Delaware Blue Coats. This shows how highly he was regarded by the G League teams.
Championship with Astros de Jalisco (2023)
In 2023, Shamorie Ponds led the Astros de Jalisco to win the CIBACOPA league title. He was even named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Finals! This was a big achievement in his professional career.
Joining the Erdenet Miners (2024–Present)
In December 2024, Ponds moved to Mongolia to play for the Erdenet Miners in The League.

Shamorie Ponds is the son of Shawn Ponds and Lamell Brightwell. He has a brother named Shawn and two sisters named Shamell and Shaniaya.
