Shandon, Dublin facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Shandon is a small group of streets located in Dublin, Ireland. You can find it on the city's Northside, within a larger area called Phibsboro.

Welcome to Shandon!

Shandon is known for its charming houses built a long time ago. It sits right next to the Royal Canal, which is a waterway that runs through parts of Ireland.

What is Shandon?

Shandon is made up of three rows of houses, called "terraces." These houses were built around 1926. They have a special look, often described as Edwardian or Victorian style. This means they were built during a time when King Edward VII was on the throne (Edwardian) or Queen Victoria (Victorian), and they have a classic, often grand, design.

Shandon's Homes Through the Years

Over time, Shandon has grown! In 1952, more houses were added. These new homes, called Shandon Gardens, were made of concrete. Later, even more areas like Shandon Crescent and Shandon Green were built, making the community bigger.

Playing at Shandon Pitch and Putt Club

One of the fun places in Shandon is the Shandon Pitch and Putt Club. This club has an 18-hole course where people can play Pitch and Putt. Pitch and Putt is a bit like golf, but on a smaller scale, perfect for practicing your short shots! The club is part of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland, which helps organize the sport across the country.
