Shane Brandon McMahon (born January 15, 1970) is an American businessman and a retired professional wrestler. He is famous for his time in WWE, where he was known for performing daring, high-risk moves.
He is the son of WWE owner Vince McMahon and a member of the famous McMahon family. Shane started working for the family company, then called the WWF, when he was only 15. He worked his way up from the warehouse to become a referee, announcer, and eventually a popular wrestler. Behind the scenes, he was an important executive.
As a wrestler, Shane won several championships. These include the European Championship and the Hardcore Championship. He also won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship and the WWE World Cup in 2018.
In 2009, McMahon left WWE to focus on other business projects. He returned in 2016 and was a big part of WWE shows until 2019. He made a few appearances after that, with his last one at WrestleMania 39 in 2023.

Early life
Shane Brandon McMahon was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland, to Vince and Linda McMahon. He has a younger sister, Stephanie McMahon. After high school, he went to Boston University and graduated in 1993 with a degree in communications.
Professional wrestling career
World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment (1988–2009)
Early Years and The Corporation
Shane first appeared on screen as a referee named Shane Stevens in 1988. He later became a regular character during the Attitude Era. He joined his father's group, The Corporation, and acted as a villain. He even won the European Championship from X-Pac at WrestleMania XV.
Later, Shane took control of The Corporation and feuded with his own father. He then joined forces with The Undertaker to form the Corporate Ministry. This led to a match against Stone Cold Steve Austin for control of the WWF, which Shane and Vince won.
Shane also had a storyline feud with Test, who was dating his sister Stephanie. At SummerSlam, Test defeated Shane in a "Love Her or Leave Her" match. Shane later became an ally to Test. By 2000, he was helping other villainous wrestlers like Chris Benoit. He famously won the Hardcore Championship from Steve Blackman. He lost it at SummerSlam after Blackman knocked him off the giant stage set from 50 feet in the air.
The Alliance and Feud with Kane
In 2001, Shane began a new storyline where he feuded with his father again. In the story, Shane bought the rival company World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from under his father's nose. He defeated Vince in a Street Fight at WrestleMania X-Seven.
Shane then led the WCW wrestlers in an "Invasion" of the WWF. He joined with Paul Heyman's Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) wrestlers to form a group called The Alliance. The storyline ended at Survivor Series, where Team WWF defeated Team Alliance. After the loss, Vince "fired" Shane and Stephanie on TV.
Shane returned in 2003 and got into a rivalry with Kane. The feud started after Kane attacked Shane's mother, Linda. This led to two intense matches: a Last Man Standing match and an Ambulance match, both of which Shane lost.
Feuds with D-Generation X and Bobby Lashley
In 2006, Shane returned as a villain, teaming up with his father against Shawn Michaels. This led to the reformation of D-Generation X (DX), made up of Michaels and Triple H. The McMahons fought DX in several matches, including a Hell in a Cell match at Unforgiven, which DX won.
In 2007, the McMahons feuded with Bobby Lashley. This was part of the "Battle of the Billionaires" storyline at WrestleMania 23, where Vince's chosen wrestler fought Donald Trump's chosen wrestler. Shane tried to help his father's wrestler, Umaga, but they lost. Shane, Vince, and Umaga later defeated Lashley for the ECW World Championship, with Vince winning the title.
Final Feuds and Departure
In early 2009, Randy Orton started a feud with the McMahon family. After Orton attacked Vince, Shane returned to fight him. Shane faced Orton in a No Holds Barred match at No Way Out but lost. The feud continued, and Orton's group, The Legacy, attacked Shane, breaking his leg in the storyline. This was done to explain his absence from TV. On October 1, 2009, Shane announced he was leaving WWE.
Return to WWE (2016–2024)
Commissioner of SmackDown
Shane made a surprise return to WWE in February 2016. He interrupted his father and sister to announce he wanted control of Raw. Vince McMahon made a deal: if Shane could defeat The Undertaker in a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania 32, he would get his wish.
During the match, Shane performed his famous Leap of Faith dive from the top of the 20-foot cell. The Undertaker moved, and Shane crashed through an announce table. He lost the match, but his bravery earned him respect. Vince let him run Raw for a while anyway, and later made him the Commissioner of SmackDown alongside General Manager Daniel Bryan.
As Commissioner, Shane competed at Survivor Series and later feuded with AJ Styles. This led to a match at WrestleMania 33, which Styles won. The two shook hands afterward, ending their rivalry.
Feud with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
In late 2017, Shane began a long feud with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. After Shane attacked Owens for insulting his family, Vince McMahon put them in a Hell in a Cell match. Owens won after Zayn helped him.
The rivalry continued into 2018. At Fastlane, Shane interfered in a match, angering Owens and Zayn, who attacked him. This led to a tag team match at WrestleMania 34, where Shane teamed with a returning Daniel Bryan to defeat Owens and Zayn.
Best in the World and Final Storylines
At the Crown Jewel event, Shane replaced an injured The Miz in the finals of the WWE World Cup tournament and won. He declared himself the "Best in the World." He and The Miz then formed a tag team and won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. They soon lost the titles, and Shane attacked The Miz, becoming a villain again.
Shane defeated The Miz at WrestleMania 35 in a Falls Count Anywhere match. He then feuded with Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens. His storyline as a power-hungry villain ended when he lost a ladder match to Owens, with the rule that the loser would be "fired."
After a long break, Shane returned in 2020 to host a segment called Raw Underground. In 2022, he was a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble match. His final appearance was a surprise match against The Miz at WrestleMania 39 in 2023, which ended early after he tore a muscle in his leg. In 2024, his contract with WWE ended.
Professional wrestling style and persona
Shane McMahon is famous for his high-risk moves. His signature move is the "Coast to Coast," a dropkick from the top rope to an opponent in the opposite corner. He is also known for the "Leap of Faith," a diving elbow drop from a high place, like the top of the steel cell. He often wore baseball jerseys that said "Shane O Mac" on the front.
Business career
Shane started working for WWE at age 15 in the merchandise warehouse. He worked in many roles, including helping to launch WWE.com in 1997. He eventually became the Executive Vice President of Global Media, helping the company make TV deals around the world. He left WWE in 2010 to work on other projects.
Outside of WWE, Shane became the CEO of a company called You On Demand, which provided video services in China. The company later became Ideanomics, and Shane serves as its executive chairman. He is also a part-owner of the Indian Larry Motorcycle Shop in New York.
Personal life
Shane is married to Marissa Mazzola, and they have three sons. His sons have sometimes appeared on WWE television, walking him to the ring for his matches.
On July 19, 2017, Shane was in a helicopter that had to make an emergency landing in the ocean. Luckily, he and the pilot were not seriously hurt. Shane is also a fan of mixed martial arts and trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.
Other media
Shane McMahon has appeared in movies and TV shows. He had a small role in the 2002 movie Rollerball and appeared in two episodes of the TV show NCIS: Los Angeles in 2019. He has also been a playable character in many WWE video games since 1999.
