Shannon is a small, unincorporated community located in Clay County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government. In 2000, about 23 people lived there. Shannon is part of the larger Wichita Falls metropolitan area.

History of Shannon, Texas
Shannon started as a settlement called Stampede Springs. It began around 1878 when Rachel D. Ivie built a general store. The name was later changed to Shannon. This new name honored a pioneer family from Ireland's Shannon Valley.
Growth and Changes in Population
A post office opened in Shannon in 1893. By the mid-1920s, the community had grown to 112 people. For the next 30 years, the population stayed about the same. However, the number of businesses in Shannon decreased. By the late 1970s, the population had dropped to 23. It remained at 23 people in both 1990 and 2000.
Tornadoes in Shannon
Shannon has experienced tornadoes. In April 1955, a tornado hit the community. Luckily, no one was hurt. More recently, on May 22, 2020, another tornado passed through. It traveled south towards Joy. Storm chasers saw this tornado, but it caused no damage in Shannon.
Where is Shannon Located?
Shannon is in the very south-central part of Clay County. It sits on Farm to Market Road 175. The community is about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Henrietta. It is also about 20 miles (32 km) north of Jacksboro.
Education in Shannon
In 1910, Shannon had its own school. It had 82 students and two teachers. Today, students in Shannon attend schools in the Midway Independent School District.
