Shara's Athletics Journey
Starting with Anguilla
Shara Proctor began her career representing Anguilla. She competed in big events like the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She also took part in the 2007 World Championships. However, she did not reach the final rounds in these early competitions.
In November 2010, Shara decided to compete for Great Britain. Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory. This means it cannot send its own teams to the Olympic Games. This is because Anguilla does not have its own recognized National Olympic Committee. Competing for Great Britain allowed Shara to take part in more major international events.
Competing for Great Britain
In 2012, Shara won her first important medal for Great Britain. It was a bronze medal in the long jump. This happened at the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships. She set a new British indoor record with a jump of 6.89 metres.
Her longest outdoor jump is 7.07 metres. She achieved this in August 2015 in Beijing. She also competed in the triple jump, with a best of 13.74 metres in May 2009.
In November 2012, Shara moved her training base. She went from Florida to Loughborough in the UK. This was to stay with her coach, Rana Reider. When her coach later moved to the Netherlands, Shara moved there too.
On 28 August 2015, Shara had a historic moment. At the World Championships in Beijing, she jumped 7.07 metres. This made her the first British female long jumper to clear 7 metres. It also set a new British record and earned her a silver medal.
Shara continued to win medals in her career. She won bronze medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She also earned a bronze at the 2018 European Athletics Championships. Shara Proctor announced her retirement from athletics in 2022.
