Shara Proctor (born 16 September 1988) is a famous former long jumper who was born in Anguilla. She is a record-breaking athlete who holds the national long jump records for both Anguilla and Great Britain.

One of her most amazing moments was on August 28, 2015, at the World Championships in Beijing. She made a huge jump of 7.07 meters, becoming the first British woman ever to jump past the 7-meter mark. This incredible jump set a new British record and won her a silver medal. She also won the top prize in the IAAF Diamond League competition in 2013. Her younger sister, Shinelle Proctor, is also an athlete who competes as a sprinter for Anguilla.

Athletic Career

Shara Proctor's journey in athletics saw her representing two different places, which is quite unique for an athlete.

Representing Anguilla

Shara began her international career competing for her home country, Anguilla. She took part in major events like the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2007 World Championships.

In 2010, she made a big decision. She announced she would start competing for Great Britain. This was because Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory and doesn't have its own National Olympic Committee. Without this committee, athletes from Anguilla couldn't compete in the Olympic Games. By switching to Great Britain, Shara opened up the opportunity to chase her Olympic dream.

Even after this change, she could still represent Anguilla at other events like the World Athletics championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Representing Great Britain and England

In 2012, Shara won her first major medal for Great Britain. She earned a bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships with a jump of 6.89 meters. This was a new British national record for an indoor competition.

Her personal best jump outdoors is the amazing 7.07-meter leap she made in Beijing in 2015. This jump not only won her a World Championship silver medal but also wrote her name in the history books as the best female long jumper from Britain.

Throughout her career, Shara was dedicated to being the best. She moved from her training base in Florida to Loughborough in the UK to work with a top coach. When her coach moved to the Netherlands, she moved too, showing her commitment to her sport.

She continued to succeed, winning bronze medals at both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 European Athletics Championships. After a long and successful career, Shara Proctor announced her retirement from athletics in 2022.
