About Sheaoak Flat
Sheaoak Flat became an official "locality" in May 1999. A locality is a small area with a specific name. When it was created, it included an old "shack site," which means a place where simple huts or cabins were built.
Name and Boundaries
The name "Sheaoak Flat" was already well-known in the area. However, its spelling was slightly changed. It used to be "Shea Oak Flat" but was updated to "Sheaoak Flat."
In 2014, the edges of Sheaoak Flat were clearly defined. To the west, it's bordered by the St Vincent Highway. To the north, you'll find Micky Flat Road. The eastern side is along the beautiful Gulf St Vincent. A specific land line marks its southern boundary.
What's the Land Like?
Most of the land in Sheaoak Flat is used for "primary production." This means it's used for things like farming or raising animals. It's how people produce raw materials from the land.
Near the coast, the land is used for different purposes. There's an area with houses and buildings, which local papers call a "village environment." This part is set aside for people to live.
Between the village and the coastline, there's "coastal open space." This land is for everyone to enjoy. It also acts as a natural barrier to protect against rising sea levels.
North of the village, there's a "rural living" area. Here, people can build homes on larger pieces of land. The rest of the coastal land is for "coastal conservation." This means it's protected to keep its natural beauty. Human activities here are kept to a minimum to protect the environment.
Who Governs Sheaoak Flat?
Sheaoak Flat is part of a few different government areas. For federal elections, it's in the Division of Grey. This is how people vote for their representatives in the national government.
For state elections, it's in the Electoral district of Narungga. This is for voting for representatives in the state government of South Australia.
Finally, for local services like roads and rubbish collection, Sheaoak Flat is managed by the Yorke Peninsula Council. This is the local government for the area.
