Sheep Island is a small, empty island covered in grass. It is about 15 acres (6.1 hectares) in size. You can find it just a short distance from Walney Island in north-west England. Sheep Island is part of a group called the Islands of Furness. It is located in the area of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria county.
Exploring Sheep Island
Sheep Island is a special place because it has no people living on it. It is also quite close to the shore.
How to Visit the Island
You can walk to Sheep Island when the tide is low. This means the sea water has gone out, making a path. You can walk from Walney Island or from Piel Island. The walk from Piel Island is about 1 mile (1.5 kilometers). There are no buildings or places to find shelter on Sheep Island.
A Look Back in Time
For a few years, between 1892 and 1922, there was a small hospital building on Sheep Island. It was made of wood and built by the local council. This hospital was meant to be a place where people with certain illnesses could stay away from others. However, it was not used very often.
