Shelly A. Glover (born January 2, 1967) is a Canadian who used to be a police officer and then a politician. She made history in 2008 when she became the first policewoman to be elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Canada. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area, called a riding, in the Canadian Parliament.

Shelly Glover represented the riding of Saint Boniface in Manitoba until 2015. She was part of the Conservative Party. She also served in the Cabinet of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Cabinet is a group of important government ministers who help the Prime Minister make decisions.

About Shelly Glover

Early Life and Career

Shelly Glover was born on January 2, 1967. She can speak both English and French very well. She is also a Métis person from Manitoba, which means she has Indigenous and European heritage.

Before she became a politician, Shelly Glover worked as a police officer for almost 19 years with the Winnipeg Police Service. She rose to the rank of sergeant. While she was working as an MP in Ottawa, she was on a break from her police job. Shelly is married to Bruce, who was also a police officer. They have five children together.

Her Time in Politics

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In the 2008 federal election, Shelly Glover ran for the Conservative Party in the Saint Boniface area. She won the election, beating the previous MP, Raymond Simard. This made her the first policewoman to become an MP in Canada.

After she was elected, Prime Minister Stephen Harper chose her to be a Parliamentary Secretary for Official Languages. This role helps a minister with their duties. She was re-elected in the 2011 election.

Important Roles in Government

On July 15, 2013, Shelly Glover was given a very important job. She became the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. As a minister, she was in charge of things like Canadian culture, arts, and making sure both English and French are supported across the country.

For example, in October 2013, her office announced support for a group called Tsi Kionhnheht Ne Onkwawenna Language Circle. This group works to create tools to help people learn the Mohawk language.

A Small Mix-Up with Election Rules

After the 2011 election, there was a small issue with some paperwork for Shelly Glover's campaign. Elections Canada, the group that oversees elections, noticed that some documents were not filed correctly. Her campaign later explained that it was an honest mistake and they had accidentally spent a little more money than allowed. They fixed the issue, and she was not penalized.

After Her Time in Ottawa

Shelly Glover decided not to run for re-election in 2015. After leaving federal politics, she officially resigned from the Winnipeg Police Service in April 2018.

She later became involved in provincial politics in Manitoba. On August 25, 2021, she announced she was running to become the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba. She was one of two candidates but did not win the leadership election.

In March 2025, Shelly Glover shared that she was thinking about starting a new political party in Manitoba. This new party would aim to be a more moderate option for voters.
