A Look Back: History of the Church
The church was designed by an architect named William Forsyth McGibbon. He used a style called Gothic style, which looks like churches from the 13th century. The church hall was finished in 1894. The main church building was completed in 1900.
How the Church Got Its Name
When it first opened, the church was called Sherbrooke United Free Church. It got the name "Sherbrooke" from its location on Sherbrooke Avenue. This street was named after the first family who lived there. They had connections to a place called Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia in Canada.
Joining Other Churches
In 1929, the United Free Church of Scotland joined with the Church of Scotland. This meant Sherbrooke Church became part of the larger Church of Scotland.
During World War II, another church, St Gilbert's Parish Church, joined with Sherbrooke. The St Gilbert's building, which was built in 1911, was later moved. It was taken apart brick by brick and rebuilt about 5 miles away in Burnside, South Lanarkshire. It is still used there today.
In late 2017, Mosspark Parish Church also joined with Sherbrooke. This created the church we know today as Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church. The old Mosspark church buildings, built in 1927, are now used by another group called Harvest Glasgow.
The Church Building Today
The church building is located at 240 Nithsdale Road. It is very close to Dumbreck railway station. The building is considered a Category B Listed structure. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.
Fire and Rebuilding
In 1994, the church was almost finished with a big renovation project. Sadly, a serious fire destroyed much of the building. Even though it was badly burned, the church was rebuilt. An architect named James Cuthbertson led the restoration work. The rebuilding was finished by 1998.
After the fire, a new pipe organ was installed. The rebuilt church also has beautiful, modern stained glass windows.
Who is the Minister?
A minister is the leader of a church congregation. One past minister was Very Rev George Johnstone Jeffrey. He served the church from about 1928 to 1952. He was later chosen to be the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which is a very important role.
The current minister of Sherbrooke Mosspark Parish Church is the Reverend Thomas L. Pollock. He has been the minister since 2003.
