Sheridan is located on the western side of Placer County. It sits along State Route 65. The community is about 7.5 miles (12.1 km) northwest of Lincoln. In 2010, about 1,238 people lived in Sheridan.

Sheridan has an interesting history. It was first known by a different name: Union Shed. The community changed its name to Sheridan around the time of the American Civil War. It was renamed after a famous general, Philip Sheridan.

The first post office in Sheridan opened in 1868. It closed for a short time in 1870. But don't worry, it soon opened again!
