Sherilyn Peace Garnett, born in 1969, is an American lawyer. She currently serves as a judge for the United States. Her role is a district judge in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Before this, she was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court from 2014 to 2022.

About Sherilyn Garnett
Early Life and Education
Sherilyn Garnett was born on Grand Cayman, an island in the Cayman Islands. She went to the University of California, Riverside. In 1991, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. Later, in 1995, she received her law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from Harvard Law School.
Her Career as a Lawyer
Sherilyn Garnett started her career as a lawyer in 1995. She worked at a law firm called Altheimer & Gray in Chicago. From 1998 to 1999, she worked for Judge Barry Ted Moskowitz. This job is called a law clerk, where she helped the judge with legal research.
After that, she worked at another law firm, Arnold & Porter, in Los Angeles. From 2001 to 2014, she became an Assistant United States attorney. This means she was a lawyer who worked for the U.S. government. She helped to prosecute crimes in the Central District of California.
During her time as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, she held important roles. She was the chief of the general crimes section in 2014. Before that, she was the deputy chief from 2011 to 2014. She also worked as the domestic terrorism coordinator from 2008 to 2011.
Becoming a Judge
In 2014, Sherilyn Garnett became a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court. She was chosen for this role by Governor Jerry Brown. She served in this position until June 2022.
Serving as a Federal Judge
On December 15, 2021, President Joe Biden chose Sherilyn Garnett to become a federal judge. This means she would serve in a higher court for the United States. She was nominated for a position in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. This specific judge position became open when Judge Manuel Real retired.
To become a federal judge, a person must be approved by the United States Senate. On February 16, 2022, she had a hearing with the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. This committee reviews people chosen for judge roles. On March 10, 2022, the committee voted to approve her nomination.
The full Senate then voted on her nomination. On April 27, 2022, the Senate voted to end debate on her nomination. This step is called "invoking cloture." Later that same day, the Senate voted to confirm her as a judge. She officially received her job as a judge on June 24, 2022.
