Shervin Haji Aghapour (Persian: شروین حاجی آقاپور) is an Iranian singer and songwriter. He was born on March 30, 1997, in Babolsar, Iran. He started sharing his music online in 2018.
Shervin became well-known after appearing on the TV show New Era in 2019. He released his first song, "Maybe Paradise," which became popular with young people in Iran. He became even more famous for his song "Baraye," which was called "the anthem" of the 2022 protests in Iran.
In 2023, Shervin Hajipour won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Song for Social Change for "Baraye." This was a big achievement! Time magazine also named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2023.
In March 2024, Shervin faced legal issues because of his song "Baraye." He was sentenced to jail time and ordered to create music with certain messages. However, in September 2024, he announced that he had received a pardon.
Early Life and Music Start
Shervin Haji Aghapour was born on March 30, 1997, in Babolsar, Mazandaran, Iran. He began learning music at a young age, starting violin lessons when he was eight years old.
As he got older, he started writing his own music. He studied economics at the University of Mazandaran. While in college, he composed music for plays and helped with editing. Later, he began to sing his own songs.
Music Career and "Baraye"
When Shervin was 22, he joined New Era, a popular TV talent show. He made it to the finals of the first season.
During the 2022 protests in Iran, Shervin released his song "Baraye..." (which means "For..." or "Because of..."). The song's lyrics were inspired by messages from people supporting the protests. It also mentioned the important slogan "Zan, Zendegi, Âzâdi."
He shared "Baraye" on his Instagram page. It quickly received over 40 million views in less than two days! Many other Iranians also shared videos of themselves singing or playing the song.
On September 29, 2022, Shervin Hajipour was arrested because of his song "Baraye." He was made to remove the song from his social media. Many people, including other musicians, spoke out against his arrest.
After his arrest, many social media users suggested "Baraye" for a new Grammy Award category: "Best Song For Social Change."
Shervin was released on bail on October 4, 2022. He later posted on Instagram that he regretted his song being used by political groups outside Iran. Some activists believed he might have been forced to say this.
At the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in 2023, Shervin Hajipour received the Special Merit Award for Best Song For Social Change for "Baraye." The award was presented by U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, who spoke about the song's powerful message. In April 2023, Time magazine included Shervin in their list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
In August 2023, Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed shared that Shervin Hajipour's song "Dornaye Mongharez" would be the main song for the drama series Meray Paas Tum Ho. Shervin also produced the Persian version of the song for the series.
On March 1, 2024, Shervin Hajipour was sentenced to jail time. This was for creating what was called "propaganda against the government" and "encouraging the public to riot." On July 31, 2024, he shared a video saying his sentence was final and he had to go to prison soon. However, on September 23, 2024, Shervin announced that he had received a pardon.
