Discovering Shiloh, Arkansas

Shiloh is one of the oldest communities in Pope County. The Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church was started there in the 1830s. It was built near Shiloh Creek at a place known as the Williamson camp ground. This area was used for special religious gatherings called camp meetings. These meetings were very common in the early 1800s during a time called the Second Great Awakening. People would gather for worship, preaching, and communion.

A Look Back at Shiloh's History

In 1872, an important event happened in the Shiloh area during the Pope County Militia War. On July 8, a group of law enforcement officers were involved in a situation where some men were harmed. This event was a big part of the local history at the time.

Helping the Land with the CCC

On June 25, 1935, a special camp was set up east of the Shiloh church. This camp was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that helped young men find work. While many CCC camps worked in forests and parks, the Shiloh camp (also called Fort Shiloh) focused on soil conservation. Their main job was to fix problems like soil erosion, which happens when soil is washed away by wind or water.

Moving Cemeteries for Lake Dardanelle

In the 1960s, a new lake called Lake Dardanelle was being filled with water. Because of this, remains from four old cemeteries had to be moved. These cemeteries were Shiloh, Williamson, and Smith from Pope County, and Jetton and Reznor from Johnson County. All of these were moved to a new place called Shiloh-Williamson Memorial Cemetery. This new cemetery is located close to where the original Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church once stood.

Parks and Recreation in Shiloh

Today, the Shiloh area offers fun places for people to enjoy. Two city parks from Russellville, Shiloh Park and Pleasant View Park, are located here. These parks are built on land that used to be old surface coal mines. Now, they provide great spots for recreation and other activities for the community.
