Shilpa Architects is a company that designs buildings and cities. It was started in 1979 in Chennai, India, by Sheila Sri Prakash. It was special because it was the first architecture company in India started by a woman on her own.
Today, Shilpa Architects has offices in Indian cities like Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai. They also have offices in New York City and Chicago in the United States. They help design whole cities and large areas. You can see their designs in places like Cholamandal Artists' Village and Mahindra World City, New Chennai. The company is known for using building ideas that are good for the environment and fit well with nature and society.
Sheila Sri Prakash is a very important person in the company. She is part of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Design Innovation. This group has 16 experts from around the world who work to make the world a better place. Sheila Sri Prakash studied architecture at Anna University School of Architecture and Planning in Chennai. She also learned more at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She was an International Fellow at Ball State University for her studies on Indian art and architecture, including Vastu Shastra.
Since it began, Shilpa Architects has grown a lot. It now has over 80 professionals working in India and the USA. The company's designers are often asked to speak at important events.
Shilpa Architects helped start the Indian Green Building Council. They are still a member of this group. The company is known for building strong, low-cost homes. In 1987, they worked with the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board and the World Bank. They created a special housing model that has been used successfully across Tamil Nadu and India. Sheila Sri Prakash even has patents for her new ideas in building. These ideas help make homes better quality while keeping costs low.
In 2003, Shilpa Architects won an award from Designshare. This was for their creative designs for school buildings. In 2008, the company received the IAD Award.

Shilpa Architects has been asked to help fix some of India's old and important buildings. They are one of the few experts chosen by the Archaeological Survey of India. This shows how good they are at design, fixing, and keeping old buildings safe.
Growing the Company
Shilpa Architects has grown into different areas. They have a company called Nirmana Investments Pvt Ltd, which helps with money and investments. This company was started by Bhargav Sri Prakash. They also have Stone Lotus, which helps with finishing the inside of buildings. Shilpa Architects also works on designs for buildings in other countries through an overseas company.
Pavithra Sri Prakash recently joined the company's board. She is an architect and urban designer. She studied architecture at Anna University School of Architecture and Planning in Chennai. She then got her master's degree in architecture and urban design from Columbia University in New York City.
Amrit Sahasranamam recently became the Chief Financial Officer. He studied Computer Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He also has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago.
Reciprocity Wave
The Reciprocity Wave is a special program created by Sheila Sri Prakash. It's a competition where students make art from recycled materials. This helps them show important ideas about society and the environment. Shilpa Architects has held three of these events. Two were in Chennai, and one was in Cubbon Park, Bangalore.
