Shin Suk-ju (Korean: 신숙주, hanja: 申叔舟; August 2, 1417 – July 23, 1475) was an important politician in Korea during the Joseon Dynasty. He came from the Goryeong Shin family. He served as the Prime Minister of Joseon from 1461 to 1466. He held the position again from 1471 to 1475.

Shin Suk-ju was very good at languages. He could speak and understand many different languages. He was especially skilled in Chinese. He worked as a language expert for King Sejong.

How Shin Suk-ju Helped Create Hangul

Shin Suk-ju played a big part in creating Hangul. Hangul is the Korean alphabet used today. He helped King Sejong develop this new writing system.

He also used Hangul to write down how people spoke Mandarin Chinese. This was in the 15th century, during the Ming dynasty in China. His notes on Chinese pronunciation were very accurate. They are still used today to learn about how Mandarin was spoken back then.
