Shinobu Sekine's Life and Judo Career
Shinobu Sekine was born in Ōarai, Ibaraki, Japan. After finishing his studies at Chuo University, he joined the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
Sekine was inspired to become an Olympic judoka after watching his rival, Isao Okano, win a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics. He dreamed of competing in the Olympics himself.
However, judo was not part of the 1968 Summer Olympics. This meant Sekine had to wait for his chance.
Reaching the Olympics
Sekine finally got his opportunity at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was 28 years old and a very experienced judoka. Before the Olympics, he had won the All-Japan Judo Championships, which is a very important competition in Japan.
The Olympic Final
At the 1972 Olympics, Sekine faced Oh Seung-Lip from South Korea. Sekine lost to Oh in an earlier round. However, he got another chance through a special part of the tournament called the repechage. This allowed him to fight his way back to the final, where he faced Oh Seung-Lip again.
The final match was very close. Sekine had to defend himself for most of the fight. But in the last few seconds, he used a move called Tai Otoshi. This move helped him take his opponent down to the mat.
The referees had to make a tough decision. Two assistant referees disagreed, but the main referee decided that Sekine had won. It was an incredibly close victory, especially since Oh had been ahead in points for most of the match. Sekine won the gold medal!
After His Victory
After winning the Olympic gold medal, Sekine retired from competing. He continued to be involved in judo in many ways. He worked as a coach and an advisor for the All-Japan Judo Federation. He also served as a referee at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Sekine also taught judo as an instructor for the Tokyo Police Department and at Heisei International University.
Shinobu Sekine passed away on December 18, 2018, when he was 75 years old.
