Shirley Schaub Wilson (born September 26, 1925 – died January 8, 2021) was a very successful American football coach and player. He was known for leading college football teams to many wins. He coached at Elon University and Duke University.

Who Was Shirley Wilson?

Shirley Wilson was born in 1925 in Madison, North Carolina. He loved football and played the sport at Davidson College. Before becoming a college coach, he coached high school football. He coached at Richard J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Coaching at Elon University

Coach Wilson became the head football coach at Elon University in 1967. He coached there until 1976. During his time at Elon, his teams won 71 games. This is the most wins for any coach in Elon's football history!

His teams were very strong, especially in his last four years. In three of those years, they won 10 or more games. He led Elon to win five championships in the Conference Carolinas. He also won one championship in the South Atlantic Conference.

Coaching at Duke University

After his great success at Elon, Coach Wilson moved to Duke University. He coached the Duke Blue Devils from 1979 to 1982. At Duke, his teams won 16 games.

His Amazing Career

Overall, Coach Wilson had a fantastic career in college football. His teams won 88 games, lost 61, and tied 3. He was recognized for his achievements. He became a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Shirley Wilson passed away at his home on January 8, 2021. He is remembered as a legendary coach.
