Shiv Nadar was born on July 14, 1945. He is a very successful Indian businessman and a kind person who gives a lot to charity. He is famous for starting a big technology company called HCL Technologies.

Mr. Nadar also leads the Shiv Nadar Foundation. This foundation works to improve education in India. He started HCL in 1976. Over many years, he changed it from a company that made computer parts into a huge technology business.

In 2008, he received the Padma Bhushan award. This is one of India's highest civilian honors. His friends sometimes call him Magus, which means "wizard" in an old language. This nickname shows how clever he is.

Since the mid-1990s, Shiv Nadar has focused on making education better in India. He has given a lot of money to help students and schools. He is one of the richest people in the world.

Early Life and Education

Shiv Nadar grew up in a village called Moolaipozhi. This village is in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, India. His parents were Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi.

He went to school in different towns. He studied at Town Higher Secondary School in Kumbakonam. He also attended Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School in Madurai.

Later, he finished high school at St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School in Trichy. He then went to The American College in Madurai for his pre-university studies. Finally, he earned a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He got this degree from PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore.

Building a Tech Company

Shiv Nadar started his career in 1967 at Cooper Engineering Ltd. in Pune. But he soon left to start his own business. He teamed up with several friends and colleagues.

Their first company was called Microcomp. It sold digital calculators in India. In 1976, Nadar and his partners founded HCL. They started it with a small investment.

In 1980, HCL expanded internationally. They opened Far East Computers in Singapore. This company sold IT hardware. It quickly made a lot of money.

In July 2020, Shiv Nadar passed on his role as chairman of HCL Technologies. His daughter, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, took over. She became the first woman to lead a big Indian IT company.

In July 2021, Mr. Nadar also stepped down as managing director. C Vijayakumar, who was the CEO, took his place.

Helping Education in India

Shiv Nadar cares a lot about education. In 1996, he founded SSN College of Engineering in Chennai. He named it after his father, Sivasubramaniya Nadar. He has given a lot of support to this college.

In 2006, he announced that the college would focus on research. It would also work with foreign universities. In 2005, Nadar joined the board of the Indian School of Business.

In 2008, his SSN Trust started two Vidyagyan schools. These schools are in Uttar Pradesh. They offer free scholarships to rural students. In 2011, he visited his old school, Town Higher Secondary School. He donated computers and other equipment there.

He was also the chairman of the board of governors for Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. This is a very important technical institute.

Personal Life

Shiv Nadar's daughter, Roshni Nadar, is now the chairwoman of HCL. His wife, Kiran Nadar, loves art and helps many charities.

Shiv Nadar and his wife enjoy playing bridge. They also support the HCL Bridge Tournament in India. Mr. Nadar is known for his generosity. He was one of the top donors in 2024.

Awards and Recognition

  • In 2008, the Indian government gave him the Padma Bhushan award. This was for his great work in the IT industry.
  • In 2007, Madras University gave him an honorary doctorate degree.
  • He was named E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year in 2007 for his services.
