Shivaji Rao Holkar (born November 11, 1859, in Indore – died October 13, 1908, in Maheshwar) was an important ruler in India. He was the Maharaja of Indore State, which was part of the Holkar dynasty. This family belonged to the Marathas, a powerful group in Indian history.
Shivaji Rao was the son of Tukojirao Holkar II. His mother was Maharani Parvati Bai Sahib. He received his education at the Daly College in Indore. This school was special because many young rulers from different princely states in central India studied there.

Becoming a Ruler
Shivaji Rao became the Maharaja of Indore on June 17, 1886. He took over after his father passed away. This made him the 12th ruler from the Holkar family.
Visiting England
In 1887, Shivaji Rao traveled to England. He went there to celebrate a special event: the 50th wedding anniversary of Queen Victoria. She was the Queen-Empress of the British Empire at that time. During his visit, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India. This was a high award given by the British.
Changes in His Rule
During his time as Maharaja, there were some challenges in how the state was managed. The British government, which had a lot of influence in India, wanted to help improve things.
In 1899, the British sent a new official, called a Resident, to Indore. This Resident was there to work closely with the state government and offer guidance. Also, in 1902, the money used in Indore State was changed. It became the same currency that was used across British India.
Later Life and Family
Shivaji Rao decided to step down from his role as Maharaja on January 31, 1903. This is called abdicating. He passed on his title to his son, Tukojirao Holkar III, who was born in 1890.
He married several times. His wives included Maharani Girja Bai Sahib Holkar, Maharani Varanasi Bai Sahib Holkar, Maharani Chandrabhaga Bai Holkar, and Maharani Sita Bai Sahib Holkar.
Shivaji Rao passed away in Maheshwar on October 13, 1908. He had two sons and six daughters.
