History of Shokan
Shokan was not always in its current spot! In the early 1900s, the original village had to move. This happened because the Ashokan Reservoir was being built on the land where Shokan first stood. The reservoir was created to supply drinking water to New York City.
A special building, the Olive and Hurley Old School Baptist Church, is an important part of Shokan's history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This means it's recognized as a place with historical importance.
