Short Pump is a community in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. It's like a neighborhood or suburb of Richmond, Virginia. In 2020, about 30,626 people lived there.

The original village of Short Pump started at a busy crossroads. This was where Three Chopt Road, Richmond Turnpike, and Pouncey Tract Road met. A local tavern became the center of the area around 1814. People say the name "Short Pump" came from a small water pump under the tavern's porch. Horses from stagecoaches would drink from it.

This area was an important stop on the main road between Richmond and Charlottesville. Many famous people visited, including Thomas Jefferson, Lord Cornwallis, and the Marquis de Lafayette. By 1853, the crossroads was officially known as Short Pump.

Today, Short Pump is a big part of Richmond's Far West End. It's known for its many shopping centers, restaurants, a skating rink, and a bowling alley. In 2003, a large outdoor shopping mall called Short Pump Town Center opened here.

History of Short Pump

Short Pump began as a simple tavern stop in the early 1800s. This tavern was at a very important crossroads. Around 1814, a man named Col. Saunders bought the tavern. It became very popular because of the local coal industry and people moving west.

Life at the Tavern

The tavern offered food, drinks, and places to stay for travelers. It also served as a post office, a place to vote, and a local market. It was open for about 35 years. For a short time, it even had a school for young white men and a doctor. While it was a gathering spot for white people, the tavern also used enslaved labor. Sometimes, slave auctions were held there.

Changes Over Time

The tavern became less important in the late 1800s, but the name "Short Pump" stayed. By the early 1900s, the old tavern was mostly gone. New buildings and businesses took its place. As cars became popular, gas stations and garages appeared. People living in Short Pump started to see their community as a suburb of Richmond. They worked to improve it, like building the Short Pump High School.

Modern Growth

By the 1990s and 2000s, Short Pump changed a lot. It went from a quiet crossroads to an "edge city." An edge city is a big area of development on the edge of a main city. The Short Pump Town Center mall was a huge part of this change.
