The Short Woods Park Mound is a very old hill, built long ago by Native American people. It is located in a part of Cincinnati, Ohio, called Sayler Park. Experts believe that people from the Adena culture built this special mound.

What is the Short Woods Park Mound?
This mound is quite large! It stands about 38 feet (11.6 meters) tall. The mound is shaped like an ellipse, which is like a stretched circle. It is about 175 feet (53.3 meters) long and 140 feet (42.7 meters) wide.
Uncovering History: What Was Found?
The Cincinnati Museum of Natural History and Science has carefully dug into the mound. This process is called excavation. They found many interesting artifacts there.
Among the discoveries were different grave goods. These are items buried with people. They also found thirty-nine skeletons. These people were buried in special log tombs. Scientists used radiocarbon dating to learn more. This method showed that the people buried here lived about 2,000 years ago.
Mounds in the Area
Long ago, many Native American mounds stood near the Ohio River in the Sayler Park area. Sadly, most of these mounds have been destroyed. This happened because of new buildings and development.
Another mound, called the Story Mound, is also in Sayler Park. It is located along Gracely Drive. Besides the Story Mound and the Short Woods Park Mound, almost no other mounds remain in this area.
Protecting History
The Short Woods Park Mound is very important for understanding history. It is a valuable archaeological site. Because of its importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This list helps protect important historical places. The Story Mound received similar protection the next year.
