Shripad Narayan Pendse (born January 5, 1913 – died March 23, 2007) was a famous writer from Maharashtra, India. He wrote many books in the Marathi language. He is best known for his interesting novels and plays.

Shripad Narayan Pendse was born in a village called Murdi. This village is in the Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra, India. He grew up to become a very important writer.

Awards and Recognition

Pendse received a special award for his writing. In 1963, his novel Rathachakra (which means The Chariot-Wheel) won the Sahitya Akademi Award. This is one of the highest literary honors in India.

Another one of his popular novels was Garambicha Bapu. This book was so good that it was translated into English in 1969. The English title was Wild Bapu of Garambi. This translation was part of a special project. It was done by the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works. This project helps share important books from different countries with the world.

Two other well-known novels by Pendse are Haddapar (meaning The Outcast) and Tumbadche Khot (meaning The Khots of Tumbad).

Travels and Learning

Shripad Narayan Pendse also had a chance to travel the world. He received a special scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation. This scholarship allowed him to visit Europe and the United States.
