Shyamal Chakraborty (5 February 1944 – 6 August 2020) was an Indian politician. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha (India's upper house of Parliament) from 2008 to 2014, representing West Bengal. He was a well-known leader from the state.

Early Years and Student Leadership
Shyamal Chakraborty began his political journey early. He was a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). This is a political party in India that works for the rights of workers and farmers.
From 1973 to 1979, he led the Students' Federation of India (SFI) in West Bengal. The SFI is a large student organization. It works to improve education and student rights across India. He also served as an All India Joint Secretary for the SFI.
Serving West Bengal
Shyamal Chakraborty held several key positions in the government of West Bengal. From 1981 to 1996, he was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. This assembly is like a state parliament, where laws are made for West Bengal. He represented the Maniktala area.
During this time, he also served as the Transport Minister of West Bengal. He held this important role from 1982 to 1996. As Transport Minister, he was responsible for managing the state's transportation systems. This included roads, buses, and other ways people travel.
