History of Sibley Village
The area where Sibley now stands was first planned in 1877. This was done for Michael L. Sullivant, who also gave his name to Sullivant Township. A year later, in 1878, Sullivant sold the land to Hiram Sibley.
The village's post office started in 1873. It was first called Burr Oaks. However, in 1880, its name was changed to Sibley. This new name honored Hiram Sibley, who had bought the land.
The World's Largest Corn Crib
Sibley was once famous for something very special. It had the largest corn crib in the world! A corn crib is a building used to store corn after it's harvested. This giant crib could hold 125,000 bushels of corn. That's a huge amount!
This amazing structure was even mentioned in Ripley's Believe It or Not!. This TV show and newspaper cartoon shares unusual facts. Sadly, the famous corn crib was taken down in 1965.
