Sid (Sidney Arthur James) Bradley (born in 1936) is an expert in Anglo-Saxon literature. He is also an academic and an author.

Who is Sid Bradley?

Sid Bradley is best known for his book Anglo-Saxon Poetry. In this book, he translated almost all of the old Anglo-Saxon poems that still exist into modern English. This makes it much easier for people today to read and understand these ancient writings.

His Early Life and Teaching

Bradley studied Anglo-Saxon at University College, Oxford. After finishing his studies, he taught this subject at King's College London. Later, he moved to the University of York, where he became a Professor of English and related literature.

Work in Denmark

From 1990, Sid Bradley worked in Denmark at the Centre for Grundtvig Studies. This center is part of the Theology Faculty at the University of Aarhus. During his time there, he researched how Anglo-Saxon literature influenced N. F. S. Grundtvig. Grundtvig (1783-1872) was a very important Danish writer, philosopher, and pastor.

Bradley wrote articles about Grundtvig's connection to Anglo-Saxon culture. He also helped edit the yearly journal Grundtvig-Studier. He even worked on a big project about Grundtvig's life story.

After Retirement

Even after retiring, Sid Bradley has stayed very active. He was the Chairman of the Trustees for the Friends of St Gregory's Minster. This group helps protect and care for a special Anglo-Saxon church in Kirkdale, North Yorkshire.

He is also part of the team that edits a magazine for the Confederation of Scandinavian Societies. He writes articles for this magazine too.
