Sidney Wallace Morrison (born May 13, 1933) is an American farmer and politician. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 to 1993. Mr. Morrison is a member of the Republican Party. Before his time in Congress, he was part of the Washington State Legislature. Later, he became the Secretary of the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Early Life and Education
Sid Morrison was born in Yakima, Washington. He went to public schools in Toppenish, Washington. In 1951, he started college at Yakima Valley College. He then went to Washington State University in Pullman. In 1954, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree there. He was also a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. After college, he served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.
Political Career
After leaving the Army, Mr. Morrison worked with his family's fruit distribution business. His political career began in 1966. He served in the Washington House of Representatives for the 15th District until 1974. From 1974 to 1980, he was a member of the Washington Senate, also representing the 15th District.
In 1980, Sid Morrison was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented Washington's 4th congressional district. While in Congress, he joined important groups like the House Energy and Agriculture Committees. He served six terms, from 1981 to 1993. In 1992, he ran for governor of Washington. However, he did not win the primary election.
In 1993, Governor Mike Lowry chose Mr. Morrison to lead the Washington State Department of Transportation. He worked as the Secretary of Transportation until 2001.
Mr. Morrison is also the chairman of the Mainstream Republicans of Washington. This is a group that supports moderate Republican ideas. In 2005, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees for Central Washington University.
Personal Life
As of 2007, Sid Morrison lived in Zillah, Washington.
