Michael Edward Lowry (born March 8, 1939 – died May 1, 2017) was an American politician. He served as the 20th governor of Washington from 1993 to 1997. Before becoming governor, Lowry was a U.S. Representative for Washington's 7th district. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education
Michael Edward Lowry was born in St. John, Washington. His parents were Helen and Robert Lowry. He grew up in this small town.
After high school, Lowry went to Washington State University. He graduated from the university in 1962.
Starting in Politics
Lowry began his career working for the Washington State Senate. He also worked as a lobbyist for a health organization. A lobbyist tries to convince lawmakers to support certain ideas.
In 1975, he was elected to the King County Council. This council helps manage the local government in King County.
Serving in Congress
In 1978, Mike Lowry was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented Washington's Seventh Congressional District. He served in Congress for ten years, from 1979 to 1989.
Running for Senator
Lowry tried twice to become a U.S. Senator. In 1983, he ran in a special election but lost. He ran again in 1988 but was not successful. After these elections, he worked at Seattle University. He also worked with an environmental group.
Governor of Washington
Mike Lowry was elected governor of Washington in 1992. He served one term, from 1993 to 1997. A governor is the leader of a state's government.

Mike Lowry married Mary Carlson in 1968. They had one daughter together.
Lowry passed away on May 1, 2017. He was 78 years old. His death was due to problems from a stroke.
