Early Life and Education
Siddaramaiah was born in a small farming village called Siddaramanahundi. This village is in the Mysore district of Karnataka, India. He is the fourth of six children in his family. He belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.
He went to school at Mount Carmel School and Vidyavardhaka High School in Mysuru. Later, he studied at Mysore University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. He also studied law and received his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree.
After finishing his law studies, Siddaramaiah worked as a junior lawyer in Mysore. He also taught law for some time at Vidyavardhaka Law College.
Family Life
Siddaramaiah is married to Parvathi. They have two sons. Sadly, his elder son, Rakesh, passed away in 2016. His other son, Yathindra, is also involved in politics. Yathindra won the Legislative Assembly elections in 2018 from the Varuna area.
Siddaramaiah has shared his views on spirituality. He has said that he is not an atheist, meaning he does not deny the existence of God. He considers himself spiritual and has taken part in religious festivals. However, he is against superstitions and prefers to look at things from a scientific point of view.
Political Journey
Siddaramaiah's political career began when a lawyer named Nanjunda Swamy noticed him. He was encouraged to run for election in the Mysore Taluka. In 1983, he won the election from the Chamundeshwari constituency. This was a surprising win that made him well-known in the Old Mysore region.
He then joined the Janata Party. He became the first head of a committee that worked to make Kannada the official language. In 1985, he was re-elected and became a Minister. He held different government roles, including Minister for Animal Husbandry, Sericulture, and Transport.
He lost an election in 1989. Later, in 1992, he became a leader in the Janata Dal party. He was elected again in 1994 and became the Minister for Finance. In 1996, he became the Deputy Chief Minister. He was later removed from this position in 1999.
After his party split, he joined the Janata Dal (Secular) faction. In 2004, when the Indian National Congress and JD(S) formed a government, he was again appointed Deputy Chief Minister. He celebrated his 75th birthday in August 2022 with a large gathering of his supporters.
Joining the Indian National Congress
In 2005, Siddaramaiah left the JD(S) party due to disagreements. He then joined the Indian National Congress at a big public meeting. In December 2006, he won a special election in Chamundeshwari. He won by a small number of votes, even though many important leaders campaigned against him.
In the 2008 state elections, he won from the Varuna Constituency. He was re-elected for the fifth time. He won the 2013 election from the same area. On May 10, 2013, he was chosen to lead the Congress party in the Karnataka assembly.
For the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, he decided to let his son contest from his usual Varuna seat. Siddaramaiah himself ran from two new areas: Chamundeshwari and Badami. He lost in Chamundeshwari but won in Badami by a small margin. After this election, the Congress party supported the Janata Dal (Secular) to form a government.
However, this coalition government later faced challenges and fell. Siddaramaiah then led the Congress party in the by-elections held in December 2019. The Congress party won only two seats, which was a setback. Because of this, Siddaramaiah resigned from his leadership roles in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
In the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, Siddaramaiah won from the Varuna constituency again. This was his ninth election win. He was then sworn in as Chief Minister for the second time.
Chief Minister of Karnataka
First Term (2013–2018)

Siddaramaiah became Chief Minister after the Congress party won a majority of seats in the 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. He led the party to victory with 122 out of 224 seats.
On May 15, 2018, he resigned from his position as Chief Minister. This was after the results of the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. He became the first Chief Minister of Karnataka in 40 years to serve a full five-year term. He is also known for presenting the state budget 13 times as a finance minister.
Second Term (2023–Present)
After the Congress party won the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, Siddaramaiah was again chosen as Chief Minister. D. K. Shivakumar was appointed as his deputy. After their first cabinet meeting, Siddaramaiah announced that five key promises from the party's election plan would be put into action. He also asked officials to stop his "zero-traffic" protocol to help reduce traffic for the public.
His team of ministers was announced the following week. He kept important roles like finance and cabinet affairs for himself. His cabinet approved changes to school textbooks, removing certain lessons. They also launched a program offering free bus rides for women on state buses. Other promises from the election were also put into action in the state budget.
In July 2023, he presented the state budget for a record 14th time. To fund the new programs, he increased taxes on certain items and services.
In July 2024, his cabinet approved a bill to reserve jobs for people who speak Kannada. This bill suggested reserving 50% to 75% of jobs for native Kannada speakers. It also proposed 100% reservation for certain government and private sector jobs. This idea faced some opposition, so the bill's approval was delayed.
Recent Challenges
In July 2023, there were some serious incidents in the state. These included the death of a police officer and other serious crimes. This led to concerns about law and order in the state.
In July 2024, one of his cabinet ministers faced accusations regarding money transfers. The minister was asked to step down, and an investigation began. Siddaramaiah acknowledged that some illegal transactions had occurred.
