Siddaramaiah (born 3 August 1947), also known as Siddu, is an Indian politician. He is currently serving as the 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka since 20 May 2023. He also held this important position from 2013 to 2018. He is one of only two people in Karnataka's history to be Chief Minister for a full five-year term.
Siddaramaiah is a member of the Indian National Congress party. He is the leader of the Congress Legislative Party. He has represented various areas in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. These include Varuna Assembly constituency, Badami Assembly constituency, and Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency. He also served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka twice.
He was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly two times. Before joining the Congress, Siddaramaiah was part of different groups within the Janata Parivar for many years.

Early Life and Education
Siddaramaiah was born on 3 August 1947. His parents were Siddarame Gowda and Boramma. He grew up in a small farming village called Siddaramanahundi. This village is in the Mysore district of Karnataka. He is the fourth of six children. His family belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.
He attended Mount Carmel School and Vidyavardhaka High School in Mysuru. Later, he studied at Mysore University. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. He also earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree.
After his studies, Siddaramaiah worked as a junior lawyer in Mysore. He also taught law for some time at Vidyavardhaka Law College.
Family Life
Siddaramaiah is married to Parvathi. They had two sons. His elder son, Rakesh, passed away in 2016. His younger son, Yathindra, is also involved in politics. Yathindra won the 2018 Legislative Assembly elections from the Varuna seat. This seat was previously held by his father.
Siddaramaiah has said he is a spiritual person. He believes in looking at things from a scientific point of view. He is against superstitions.
Political Journey
Siddaramaiah's political career began in 1983. He was elected to the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He won from the Chamundeshwari constituency. This was a big surprise victory for him.
He then joined the Janata Party. He became the first president of the Kannada Surveillance Committee. This committee worked to make Kannada the official language. In 1985, he was re-elected and became Minister for Animal Husbandry. He also handled other areas like Sericulture and Transport.
In 1994, he was elected again. He became the Minister for Finance in the Janata Dal government. In 1996, he was made Deputy Chief Minister. After some changes in his party, he joined the Janata Dal (Secular). In 2004, he became Deputy Chief Minister again. This happened when the Indian National Congress and JD(S) formed a government together.
Siddaramaiah celebrated his 75th birthday in 2022. Many people attended the event, showing their support.
Joining the Indian National Congress
In 2005, Siddaramaiah left the JD(S) party. He then joined the Indian National Congress. He gained a lot of support from different communities. In 2006, he won a special election in Chamundeshwari.
In the 2008 state elections, he won from the Varuna Constituency. He was re-elected for the fifth time. He won again from Varuna in the 2013 election.
In 2018, he decided to contest from two new constituencies. He won in Badami by a small margin. After the election, his party supported the Janata Dal (Secular) to form a government. Siddaramaiah led the coordination committee for this government.
In the 2019 by-elections, his party did not win as many seats as expected. Because of this, Siddaramaiah resigned from his leadership roles. In the 2023 Karnataka election, he won from Varuna constituency again. This was his ninth election win.
Serving as Chief Minister of Karnataka
First Term (2013–2018)
Siddaramaiah became Chief Minister in 2013. The Congress party won a clear majority of seats in the election. He was chosen as the leader of the Congress legislative party.
He resigned from his position on 15 May 2018. He became the first Chief Minister of Karnataka in 40 years to serve a full five-year term. He is also known for presenting the state budget 13 times as a finance minister.
Second Term (2023–Present)
After the Congress party won the 2023 election, Siddaramaiah was again chosen as Chief Minister. D. K. Shivakumar was appointed as his deputy.
After their first meeting, Siddaramaiah announced that five key promises from the party's election plan were approved. These promises would be put into action soon. He also asked officials to stop his "zero-traffic" protocol. This was to help reduce traffic problems for the public.
His cabinet approved changes to school textbooks. They removed some lessons added by the previous government. They also launched a scheme offering free bus rides for women on state buses. Other promises from the election were also announced.
In July 2023, he presented the state budget for the 14th time. This is a record in the state's history. He increased taxes on certain items to help fund the new schemes. In July 2024, his cabinet approved a bill. This bill would reserve jobs for people who speak Kannada in private and IT sectors.
Challenges Faced
In July 2023, the state faced some challenges related to public safety. The government worked to address these issues.
