Konijeti Rosaiah (born July 4, 1933 – died December 4, 2021) was an important Indian politician. He served as the 15th Chief Minister of United Andhra Pradesh from 2009 to 2010. He also served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2016. For a short time, he was also the Governor of Karnataka.
Rosaiah had a very long political career. It lasted for over 50 years. During this time, he held many different government jobs. He was a member of the Indian National Congress party. While he was Governor of Tamil Nadu, he also took on the role of Governor of Karnataka for a few months. This happened when the previous Governor's term ended. After finishing his five-year term as Governor of Tamil Nadu, he decided to retire from politics.

Early Life and Education
Konijeti Rosaiah was born in a village called Vemuru. This village is in the Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. His family was a middle-class Hindu family.
He studied Commerce at Guntur Hindu College. This college is part of Andhra University. While he was a student in Guntur, he was chosen as a student leader. This was his first step into the world of politics.
Starting His Political Journey
Rosaiah began his political career by learning from N.G. Ranga. Ranga was a leader of the Swatantra Party and an important person in India's fight for independence.
Rosaiah was elected to different government roles many times. He became a MLC in 1968, 1974, 1980, and 2009. He was also elected as a MLA in 1989 and 2004. In 1998, he became a MP from the Narasaraopet area. In 2011, he became the Governor of Tamil Nadu. During his long career, he worked closely with many Prime Ministers of India, including Jawaharlal Nehru.
Important Roles He Held
Rosaiah held many important minister positions in the state government of Andhra Pradesh.
As a State Minister
He served as a state minister in charge of different departments:
- In 1978, he was the Minister for Transportation, Roads, and Buildings.
- In 1980, he became the Minister for Transportation and Housing.
- In 1982, he was the Minister for Home Affairs.
- From 1989, he handled Finance, Transportation, and Electricity.
- From December 1990, he was in charge of Finance, Medical & Health, Education, and Electricity.
- From October 1992, he continued with Finance, Medical & Health, Education, and Electricity.
- From April 2004, he was the Minister for Finance, Planning, and Legislative Affairs.
As APCC President
Rosaiah was also the President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). He held this important party position from 1994 to 1996.
As Finance Minister
Rosaiah was well-known for his work as the Finance Minister. He presented the state's budget a record 16 times. Seven of these times were in a row! This was a national record. He worked as Finance Minister under several Chief Ministers. He made sure that teachers received their retirement benefits. Rosaiah was known for managing government money carefully. He made sure funds were used effectively. His long service as Finance Minister was very important for the state.
As Chief Minister
Rosaiah became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after the death of the previous Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajashekhara Reddy. As Chief Minister, Konijeti worked hard to bring stability to the state. He also made sure that all the welfare programs started by his predecessor continued.
He is often praised for how he managed the flood situation in October 2009. He also handled the law and order during the Telangana protests in December 2010. He was good at managing the budget and making sure welfare programs reached the people. He resigned as Chief Minister on November 24, 2010, saying it was for health reasons.
Honours and Retirement
In 2007, Andhra University gave Rosaiah an honorary doctorate degree. This was a special award to recognize his achievements.
He retired from active politics in August 2016. This was after he completed his term as Governor of Tamil Nadu. His political career lasted for about 60 years.
His Personal Life
Konijeti Rosaiah married Smt Sivalakshmi on June 4, 1950. They had three sons and one daughter. His sons are KS Subba Rao and KSN Murthy. His daughter is P Rama Devi.
He was known for helping people who were less fortunate. He was also a very good speaker. Besides politics, he was also involved in farming, trading, and industry.
Rosaiah passed away on December 4, 2021, at the age of 88. He died in Hyderabad, Telangana, after a short illness. Both the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of Telangana declared three days of state mourning to honor him. He was cremated with full state honors at his farmhouse in Kompally on December 5, 2021.
