Sierra Alpujata is found in the Málaga Province of Spain. It is part of a larger mountain system called the Penibaetic System. This system runs along the southern coast of Spain. You can reach the mountains from nearby towns like Monda, Coín, Mijas, or Ojén.
What is Sierra Alpujata Made Of?
The mountains here are very special because of their rocks. Geologists believe the Sierra Alpujata is what's left of an ancient underwater volcano. This volcano formed a long, long time ago. Its large crater can still be seen from above.
The rocks in Sierra Alpujata are mostly made of something called peridotite. Peridotite is a type of rock that comes from deep inside the Earth. It is often found in places where tectonic plates have pushed up ancient ocean floor.
