The Sierra Alpujata is a mountain range in southern Spain. It is part of the coastal mountains behind the Costa del Sol Occidental in Andalusia. This range sits between the Sierra Blanca and the Sierra de Mijas.

What is Sierra Alpujata?

The Sierra Alpujata is a mountain range known for its unique geology. It is a popular spot for hiking and exploring nature. The highest point in the range is a peak called Cerro Castillejos.

Where is Sierra Alpujata Located?

Sierra Alpujata is found in the Málaga Province of Spain. It is part of a larger mountain system called the Penibaetic System. This system runs along the southern coast of Spain. You can reach the mountains from nearby towns like Monda, Coín, Mijas, or Ojén.

What is Sierra Alpujata Made Of?

The mountains here are very special because of their rocks. Geologists believe the Sierra Alpujata is what's left of an ancient underwater volcano. This volcano formed a long, long time ago. Its large crater can still be seen from above.

The rocks in Sierra Alpujata are mostly made of something called peridotite. Peridotite is a type of rock that comes from deep inside the Earth. It is often found in places where tectonic plates have pushed up ancient ocean floor.

Plants and Animals of Sierra Alpujata

Because of the special type of rock (peridotite), the soil in Sierra Alpujata is not very rich. This means that plants find it hard to grow there. Even though people have tried to plant more pine and eucalyptus trees, the area still has very few trees.

The main plants you will see are juniper bushes and other types of shrubland. These plants are tough and can grow in difficult conditions. They are well-suited to the rocky, dry environment of the Sierra Alpujata.
