The Sierra de Cuera (also known as Asturian: Sierra del Cuera in Asturian) is a mountain chain in northern Spain. It stretches for about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) and is part of the larger Cantabrian Mountains.

The highest point in this mountain range is a peak called Pico Turbina, which stands 1,315 meters (4,314 feet) tall. The Sierra de Cuera is quite close to the sea, only about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away, and it runs alongside the coast. You can find these mountains within several areas in Asturias, Spain, including Cabrales, Llanes, Peñamellera Alta, Peñamellera Baja, and Ribadedeva.

A Look at History: The Battle of El Mazuco

The Sierra de Cuera mountains played a very important role during the Spanish Civil War, which happened between 1936 and 1939. A key spot in these mountains was a mountain pass called El Mazuco.

After the city of Bilbao was taken, one side in the war, led by General Franco, tried to move forward. They wanted to push the other side, known as the Republicans, out of these mountains. To do this, they planned a special attack from two directions, like a giant pincer. One group moved southwest from Llanes, and another moved west from Panes along the Río Cares river, heading towards Cabrales.

However, the mountains were very rough and difficult to cross. The Republican defenders also fought very bravely. Because of this, the attacking forces were stopped in their tracks. This important fight became known as the Battle of El Mazuco. It showed how important the mountains were for defense.
