Cabrales sits right on the border between Asturias and another Spanish region, Castile and León. It is a very mountainous place. Parts of the Sierra de Cuera and Picos de Europa mountain ranges are found here. It is also part of the Central Massif of the Cantabrian Mountains.

What is the History of Cabrales?

People have lived in Cabrales for a very long time. Many ancient objects have been found here from prehistory. For example, tools made from stone and bone from the Upper Paleolithic period were discovered. There were also cave paintings and an old burial site in a place called Las Canes cave. Even Bronze Age-era axes found in the area were named "Cabrales axes." We don't know much about Cabrales during the time of the Roman conquest of Spain.

Cabrales was first mentioned in the Middle Ages. This was after a battle in 722 called Covadonga. At that time, Cabrales was a known area, but it wasn't very important politically. In the 14th century, Cabrales was officially called a municipality. Records show they supported King Pedro I of Castile. Later, in the 16th century, powerful families like the Barcena and González de Buerdo dynasties ruled the region.

In September 1937, a battle called the Battle of El Mazucu took place in Cabrales during the Spanish Civil War. One side, the Francoist forces, won against the Republican army. This led to the Republican army leaving Asturias.

For a long time, the main way people in Cabrales made a living was through dairy farming. This is why Cabrales cheese is so famous! However, in the 1980s, things started to change. The municipality began to focus more on tourism and the hotel industries. This meant that the dairy industry became less important for jobs, and more people started working in the service industry.
