What is a Burial?
A burial usually involves placing a human body into a cemetery. A cemetery is a special place set aside for graves. Most of the time, the body is placed inside a coffin. A coffin is a special box designed to hold the body. This coffin is then lowered into a grave, which is a hole dug in the ground.
After the coffin is in the grave, the hole is filled with earth. Often, a headstone is placed at the top of the grave. A headstone is a stone marker that usually shows the person's name, birth date, and death date. It helps people remember who is buried there. It also allows family and friends to visit the grave.
Different Types of Burials
Sometimes, many bodies are placed into the same grave. This is called a mass burial or a mass grave. This often happened in the past, especially during times of war or large disasters. In these situations, there might not have been enough time or resources to bury each person separately. Mass graves are usually not marked with individual headstones.
