Sierra de Sangra is a huge, old volcano that is now extinct. It is covered in ice and snow. Its highest point is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of a town called Villa O'Higgins.

This large volcanic mountain is very old and has been worn down by weather over many years. It sits right on the border between Argentina and Chile in a region called Patagonia.

What is Sierra de Sangra?

Sierra de Sangra is known as a stratovolcano. This type of volcano is tall and cone-shaped. It is built up over a long time by many layers of hardened lava, ash, and rocks. Think of it like building a sandcastle layer by layer.

An Extinct Volcano

When we say Sierra de Sangra is an extinct volcano, it means it is no longer active. It is not expected to erupt again. Many volcanoes become extinct after millions of years. They stop having the hot magma needed to cause eruptions.

A Mountain of Ice

The name "ice-clad" means the mountain is covered in ice. Sierra de Sangra has glaciers and snow on its slopes. This is common for very tall mountains, especially in cold places like Patagonia. Over time, the ice and weather have "eroded" or worn away parts of the mountain.

Where is Sierra de Sangra Located?

Sierra de Sangra is found in the amazing Andes mountain range. The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world. They stretch along the western side of South America.

On the Border

This volcano is special because it sits right on the border. One side is in Argentina, and the other is in Chile. This area is part of Patagonia, a wild and beautiful region. Patagonia is known for its stunning landscapes, including mountains, glaciers, and vast plains.

A Part of Patagonia

Patagonia is a large area at the southern end of South America. It is shared by Argentina and Chile. It is famous for its rugged beauty, strong winds, and cold weather. Many unique plants and animals live there. Sierra de Sangra is one of the many natural wonders in this incredible region.
