Sierro is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Almería province of Spain. It is part of the Andalusia region. Sierro sits in a beautiful valley next to the River Sierro. This area is known as the 'Comarca del Mármol', which means 'county of the marble', because of its marble quarries. The name 'Sierro' might come from the Latin word 'serra', meaning 'mountain range'.

About Sierro: A Village in the Valley
Sierro is a village tucked into a narrow valley. Today, most people living in Sierro are descendants of families who came from Murcia and Albacete. Some also have roots in Castile and other parts of Andalusia.
Long ago, in the 15th century, people used to talk about 'High Sierro' and 'Low Sierro'. This might have referred to different parts of the village based on their elevation in the valley.
Connecting Sierro: The First Road
For a long time, it was hard to get to Sierro because of its location in the valley. The very first road into Sierro was built by a famous engineer named Francisco Jimenez Ontiveros. He was from Sierro and was a very important person in the 1930s and 1940s, even leading the national railway company, Renfe.
This road was quite special because it was built on supports attached to the side of the mountain!
Important Families of Sierro
The Jimenez Ontiveros family was one of the most important families in Sierro. Francisco Jimenez Ontiveros, the engineer, also had a brother named Federico Jimenez Ontiveros. Federico was a medical doctor, a hospital director in Seville, and even a General in the Spanish Air Force.
The old family home is still a landmark in the village. It stands proudly near the main fountain square. You can find a special plaque there dedicated to Federico. Above it, there's another plaque honoring his father, Jose Jimenez Sanchez.
This family owned many large farms, called cortijos, a mill, and lots of land. They grew olive trees, almond trees, and orange trees. Many family members also served the town as mayors and town secretaries for a long time, showing their strong connection to Sierro.
