The Siffleur River

The Siffleur River is a short river located in the Canadian Rockies in western Alberta, Canada. It is one of the first rivers to join the North Saskatchewan River. This makes it an early tributary of that larger river.

Where Does the Siffleur River Start?

The Siffleur River begins its journey high up between two mountains: Devon Mountain and Clearwater Mountain. This starting point is known as Clearwater Pass.

What Other Streams Join the Siffleur River?

As the Siffleur River flows, it gets bigger by collecting water from other streams. First, Dolomite Creek joins it, bringing water from Isabella Lake. After that, the Escarpment River also adds its water to the Siffleur.

Where Does the Siffleur River End?

The Siffleur River continues its path until it reaches a special spot. It plunges over Siffleur Falls, creating a beautiful waterfall. After the falls, the Siffleur River meets the North Saskatchewan River. This meeting point is just before the large, human-made Lake Abraham.

How Did the Siffleur River Get Its Name?

The name "Siffleur" was chosen by a person named James Hector in 1858. He was exploring the area and noticed something interesting. The name comes from the loud, shrill whistles of the marmots that live there. Marmots are a type of large ground squirrel.

What Else Is Named Siffleur in the Area?

The river isn't the only thing named Siffleur in this part of Alberta. There's also the Siffleur Wilderness Area, which is a protected natural space. And there's a mountain called Siffleur Mountain. All these names remind us of the whistling marmots that call this place home.
